비뇨기질환
What is prostatic hyperplasia?
This is one of the most common conditions in men after middle age. As the prostate enlarges, the urethra narrows and urination becomes uncomfortable. When urine does not drain properly it affects the bladder and bladder function deteriorates. This condition, in which the enlarged prostate compresses the urethra and bladder function becomes impaired so that urination is uncomfortable, is called prostatic hyperplasia. Its importance is also being recognized in Korea, with the Westernization of the diet, an aging population, rising living standards and greater interest in health.
Symptoms of prostatic hyperplasia
A problem with the prostate can produce a variety of symptoms.
- 1
- A feeling of urine remaining after voiding (residual urine)
- 2
- You go to the toilet frequently. (frequent urination)
- 3
- The urine stops midstream (intermittency)
- 4
- A sudden, uncontrollable urge to urinate (urinary urgency).
- 5
- The urine stream is weak (weak or thin stream)
- 6
- Urine will not flow without straining (abdominal straining)
- 7
- Waking up several times at night to go to the toilet (nocturia).
Causes of prostatic hyperplasia
The greatest influences on prostatic hyperplasia are increasing age and male hormones. Genetic factors, constitution, nutrition, diet and ethnic differences have all been discussed, but none has been clearly established. Given that it occurs frequently in older men, whose endocrine function is declining, the leading theory is that it is closely related to male hormones. The histological changes of prostatic hyperplasia begin at age 35, and it is so common that about 60% of men in their 60s and 80% of men in their 80s are affected.
