What is recurrent shoulder dislocation?

Shoulder dislocation, commonly described as the shoulder "coming out", is when the humerus, the large bone between the shoulder and the elbow, slips out of the shoulder blade. When the shoulder dislocates, the ligament is pulled away from the bone, and unlike other ligaments it does not reattach well. Once the shoulder has dislocated, recurrent dislocation follows. Depending on the direction in which the shoulder dislocates, it can be classified as anterior, posterior or multidirectional dislocation.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis is made by history taking, physical examination, X-ray, ultrasound, MRI and infrared thermography.

Non-surgical

In most cases, if the anterior labrum and glenoid are not severely damaged, conservative treatment with physiotherapy and muscle exercises is possible.

Surgical Operations

If the glenoid labrum is torn or the bone is damaged, surgical treatment using joint endoscopy is needed to repair the labrum and fix the bone back in place. When the shoulder rotates excessively and dislocates frequently, endoscopic surgery may also be performed to reduce the external rotation angle.
