What is snoring?

Insomnia is a condition in which, despite an adequate sleep environment, a person cannot fall asleep easily, cannot stay asleep, or wakes too early and cannot fall back asleep.
As a result, sleep quality declines and daytime fatigue, poor concentration and mood changes appear, making it a typical sleep disorder that negatively affects daily life as a whole.

Symptoms

  • 1
  • Loud snoring during sleep
  • 2
  • Breathing seems to stop during sleep
  • 3
  • Waking at night feeling choked or unable to breathe
  • 4
  • Daytime fatigue and sleepiness persist.
  • 5
  • You experience reduced concentration and memory decline
Causes
Obesity Excess weight builds up fat around the neck and narrows the airway.
Drinking and smoking Alcohol and nicotine relax the airway muscles and cause snoring.
Sleep position Sleeping on your back lets the tongue and soft tissue fall into the airway, making snoring worse.
Rhinitis and nasal congestion Chronic rhinitis or a blocked nose obstructs airflow through the nose, forcing mouth breathing and causing snoring.
Structural problems Enlarged tonsils and a deviated nasal septum can narrow the airway and cause snoring.
Diagnostic methods

  • 1
  • Polysomnography: brain waves, breathing and heartbeat are monitored during sleep to assess the presence and severity of snoring and sleep apnea
  • 2
  • Endoscopy and 3D-CT: identify structural abnormalities or sites of obstruction in the airway to determine the cause
Prevention and management
Maintain regular sleep habits Get into the habit of going to bed and waking up at the same time every day.
Maintain an appropriate weight

Weight management prevents fat accumulation around the airway.

Quit drinking and smoking

Alcohol and nicotine relax the airway muscles and can make snoring worse, so they are best avoided.

Improving sleep position Sleep on your side to keep the tongue from falling back into the airway.

Snoring is not merely a noise problem but a condition that can seriously affect health.
