Cartilage Injection

What is a cartilage injection?

This is an injection treatment in which a hyaluronic acid preparation, made of the same components as the body's cartilage and synovial fluid, is injected into the damaged joint to promote cartilage regeneration.

Effects of cartilage injection

  • 1
  • Absorbs external shock to protect bone and cartilage
  • 2
  • The viscosity and elasticity of joint fluid are restored
  • 3
  • Lubrication that keeps the joint moving smoothly
  • 4
  • Absorbs shock to the joint, restoring joint function and reducing pain

When degenerative arthritis develops, the hyaluronic acid present in a normal joint is no longer produced, so its concentration and molecular weight decrease. The cartilage and synovial fluid then lose elasticity and can no longer protect the joint from external impact, and pain worsens. Injecting into the joint a cartilage injection, the high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid that is the main component of synovial fluid and cartilage, restores the viscosity and elasticity of the synovial fluid, allowing the joint to move smoothly and absorbing impact, so that joint function is restored and pain is reduced.

Difference between cartilage and steroid injections
  Cartilage Injection Steroid injection
Anti-inflammatory and analgesic Present Powerful effect
Cartilage-protecting effect Protects the cartilage Long-term prescription can actually destroy cartilage
Duration of effect 6 months to over 1 year 1~4 days
Side effects Almost none Long-term prescription may cause osteoporosis, diabetes
Care after a cartilage injection

  • After a cartilage injection, it is best not to bathe on the same day, to prevent infection at the injection site.

  • Strenuous exercise such as hiking, jogging or aerobics can put a strain on the joint, so it is best to avoid it for a while.

  • Walking steadily on level ground is a great help in strengthening the muscles around the joint.

  • Combining it with gentle exercise such as swimming can also build up the flexibility of the joint.

Post-treatment precautions
  • Treatment results and duration may vary depending on individual symptoms
  • Temporary side effects may occur after treatment, and these vary with each person's condition
