Patient Rights & Responsibilities

[Patient Rights]

1. Right to receive medical care
Patients have the right to receive appropriate health care services to protect and promote their own health, and their right to health may not be infringed on grounds of sex, age, religion, social status or economic circumstances; medical personnel may not refuse treatment without just cause.

2. Right to know and to self-determination
Patients have the right to receive a full explanation from their attending physician, nurses and others about their condition, treatment methods, expected outcome and side effects, and medical costs, to ask questions in detail, and to decide whether to consent to them.

3. The right to confidentiality
Patients' physical and health-related confidentiality and privacy in connection with their care may not be infringed, and medical personnel and medical institutions may not disclose or reveal such confidential information, including personal data, except with the patient's consent or in cases prescribed by law, such as a criminal investigation.

4. The right to request counseling and mediation
In the event of a dispute over medical services, patients may apply for consultation and mediation to bodies such as the Korea Medical Dispute Mediation and Arbitration Agency.

5. The right to receive care in a safe medical environment
Patients have the right to receive care at a medical institution that protects their medical information and maintains patient safety.

1. Duty to trust and respect medical staff
Patients must give medical staff accurate information about their health, and must trust and respect the treatment plan.

2. Duty not to obtain care by improper means
Patients must identify themselves before treatment and must not obtain care by false or improper means, such as using another person's name.
