◆St. Peter's Hospital introduces an AI program for the early screening and analysis of cerebral aneurysms
St. Peter's Hospital announced on the 24th that it has strengthened its system for the early detection of cerebrovascular disease by introducing ANRISK®, an AI-based program that analyzes the risk of developing a cerebral aneurysm from health screening results alone.
A cerebral aneurysm is a condition in which a weak part of the wall of a cerebral blood vessel balloons out. It causes almost no symptoms before rupture, but once it ruptures it can lead to subarachnoid hemorrhage and result in death or severe long-term disability, so early detection matters more than anything.
Until now, confirming a cerebral aneurysm required cerebrovascular imaging such as MRA or CTA, but limits on cost and testing resources made it difficult to recommend this uniformly to everyone undergoing a health screening. The newly introduced ANRISK combines blood test values such as hemoglobin, fasting blood glucose and total cholesterol, measurements such as height, weight and blood pressure, and questionnaire results on family history and smoking to present risk as a score from 0 to 100 and one of five grades, and it also shows the factors that influenced that risk in order of their contribution.
The core of the program is that, unlike existing medical AI that reads images already taken, it first singles out those who need a detailed examination before the imaging stage. It is not, however, a technology intended to replace imaging or to make a diagnosis; it is used as a screening tool to refer to when judging whether a detailed examination is needed.
The hospital also paid attention to the referral pathway after the analysis. Patients identified as at risk can undergo cerebrovascular imaging immediately on the hospital's own 3.0 Tesla MRI and 640-channel MDCT, and if treatment is judged necessary, joint consultation between Neurointervention and Neurosurgery specialists carries them through to appropriate treatment in one stop.
Yoon, Kangjun, President and a neurosurgery specialist, said, "Alongside treating disease, we will continue to strengthen our clinical and treatment capabilities in looking ahead so that illness does not develop in the first place."
