[Medical Newspaper·Ilgan Bosa = Reporter Jeong, Gwang Seong] St. Peter's Hospital has introduced an AI program that uses health screening results to analyze the risk of cerebral aneurysm, and has set up a system that connects high-risk individuals to detailed examination and specialist care.

St. Peter's Hospital (President Yoon, Kangjun) announced on the 24th that it has introduced ANRISK, a cerebral aneurysm risk analysis program developed by medical AI company Thalos, and will begin identifying those at high risk of cerebral aneurysm at the health screening stage.

A cerebral aneurysm is a condition in which part of the wall of a cerebral blood vessel balloons out. It often causes no particular symptoms until it ruptures, but rupture can lead to subarachnoid hemorrhage, so it is important to identify those at risk early and to undergo a detailed examination if necessary.

At present, confirming whether a cerebral aneurysm is present requires imaging such as magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) or computed tomography angiography (CTA); since it is difficult to perform these tests on everyone who undergoes health screening, the hospital says a way is needed to first identify those who require a detailed examination.

The hospital therefore introduced ANRISK, which can estimate cerebral aneurysm risk using information collected at Health Screening, without taking separate cerebrovascular imaging.

‘ANRISK’ analyzes blood tests such as hemoglobin, fasting blood glucose and total cholesterol, measurements such as height, weight, waist circumference and blood pressure, and factors such as family history and smoking status.

Results are presented as a risk score from 0 to 100 and one of five risk groups, together with the factors that influenced the risk. It does not, however, diagnose a cerebral aneurysm directly or replace existing imaging; it is used as a reference for judging whether a detailed examination is needed.

Where the AI analysis shows a high level of risk, the hospital refers the patient to Neurointervention and Neurosurgery. Additional tests such as MRA or CTA are performed at the clinicians' discretion, and if a cerebral aneurysm is confirmed, the decision on whether to treat takes into account its location and size and the patient's condition.

SUH, Dae Chul, Clinical Chief of Neurointervention at St. Peter's Hospital, advised, “Cerebral aneurysms often cause almost no symptoms before rupture,” adding, “If you have risk factors such as a family history, hypertension or smoking, it is worth checking the condition of your cerebral blood vessels even without symptoms.”

President Yoon, Kangjun explained, “With a cerebral aneurysm, it is important to assess the risk and undergo the necessary tests while there are no symptoms, rather than after a rupture,” adding, “By introducing ANRISK, we have built an in-hospital treatment process so that information identified at the health screening stage leads to actual examination and treatment.”

He added, “Alongside treating disease, we will continue to strengthen our clinical and treatment capabilities in looking ahead so that illness does not develop in the first place.”
