Sleep disorder

What is excessive daytime sleepiness?

Excessive daytime sleepiness means feeling excessively drowsy during the day despite having had enough sleep at night. It is not simple fatigue but is regarded as a medical symptom that interferes with daily life and work performance. It results from poor sleep quality or a sleep disorder and can cause reduced concentration, lower productivity and an increased risk of accidents. It is therefore important to identify the exact cause and receive appropriate treatment.

Symptoms

  • 1
  • Persistent sleepiness during the day
  • 2
  • Reduced concentration at work or school
  • 3
  • Memory decline
  • 4
  • Mood swings
  • 5
  • Sudden sleep attacks
Causes
Sleep apnea Breathing repeatedly stops during sleep, lowering sleep quality and causing daytime sleepiness.
Narcolepsy It is a neurological disorder characterized by sudden daytime sleepiness and loss of muscle strength.
Restless legs syndrome Uncomfortable sensations in the legs appear before falling asleep and disturb sleep.
Poor sleep hygiene Poor sleep quality caused by irregular sleep habits, too much caffeine and use of electronic devices.
Diagnostic methods

  • 1
  • Polysomnography (PSG): brain waves, breathing and heart rate are measured during sleep to assess sleep quality and any sleep disorder.
  • 2
  • Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT): measures daytime sleep patterns and time taken to fall asleep to assess the degree of daytime sleepiness.
Methods of treatment
Treatment of sleep apnea

Breathing is improved with CPAP, an oral appliance, or surgical treatment.

Narcolepsy treatment

Symptoms are managed with stimulant medication and a regular scheduled-nap plan.

Improving lifestyle habits

Sleep quality is improved by keeping a regular sleep pattern, limiting caffeine and reducing use of electronic devices.

Prevention and management
Maintain regular sleep habits Get into the habit of going to bed and waking up at the same time every day.
Improving the sleep environment Sleep in a quiet, dark environment and keep the bedroom at a comfortable temperature.
Limit caffeine and alcohol intake

In particular, avoid caffeine and alcohol after the evening.

Limit electronic device use Minimize the use of electronic devices before bed so that sleep is not disturbed.
Regular exercise

Moderate exercise improves sleep quality, but avoid vigorous exercise right before bed.
