[Hospital News = Reporter Jeong, Yun Sik] St. Peter's Hospital (President Yoon, Kangjun) has introduced an artificial intelligence (AI)-based program that analyzes the risk of developing a cerebral aneurysm from health screening results alone.

St. Peter's Hospital announced on August 24 that it has built an early detection system which, before costly additional cerebrovascular imaging, identifies high-risk individuals using basic screening information alone and refers them promptly to specialist cerebrovascular care.

A cerebral aneurysm is a condition in which a weak point in the wall of a cerebral blood vessel balloons outward.

There are no clear symptoms until it ruptures, but once it does it leads to subarachnoid hemorrhage, which can be fatal or cause serious lasting disability, so early detection is essential.

Diagnosing it, however, requires expensive imaging such as magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) or computed tomography angiography (CTA), so there were limits to applying it uniformly to everyone undergoing health screening.

St. Peter's Hospital has therefore introduced ‘ANRISK’, developed by the medical AI company Talos.

The program comprehensively analyzes blood test results such as hemoglobin, fasting blood glucose and total cholesterol, measurements such as height, weight, waist circumference and blood pressure, and questionnaire results including family history and smoking status.

The analysis is presented as a score between 0 and 100 and five risk groups, and lists the factors affecting the risk level in order of contribution.

Unlike existing AI that reads abnormal findings in images already taken, it is distinguished by its focus on first singling out those who need a detailed examination before the imaging stage.

Professor SUH, Dae Chul of the Department of Neurointervention at St. Peter's Hospital said, “Most cerebral aneurysms cause no symptoms before they rupture, so it is hard for patients to notice anything wrong themselves,” adding, “If risk factors such as a family history, hypertension, or smoking overlap, it is worth checking the condition of your cerebral blood vessels at least once, even without symptoms.”

Since introducing ANRISK, St. Peter's Hospital has put an immediate follow-up care system in place so that patients identified as high risk are not left unattended.

Using the 3.0 Tesla MRI and 640-channel MDCT installed at the hospital, cerebrovascular imaging is performed immediately to confirm whether a cerebral aneurysm is present and its size; where treatment is needed, joint consultation between Neurointervention and Neurosurgery specialists carries the patient through to tailored treatment in one stop.

President Yoon, Kangjun said, “Once a cerebral aneurysm has ruptured, the treatment options left by the time a patient reaches hospital are greatly reduced, so the process of gauging the risk while there are no symptoms matters,” adding, “With this introduction, we have built an in-hospital treatment process so that information identified at the health screening stage leads to actual examination and treatment.”

President Yoon went on to add, “Alongside treating disease, we will continue to strengthen our clinical and treatment capabilities in looking ahead so that illness does not develop in the first place.”
