A guide to the basic concepts of statistics by Lee, Choon Sung, Director of the Spine Center at St. Peter's Hospital
(Provided by St. Peter's Hospital).
[Hospital News = Reporter Jung Yoon-sik] Lee, Choon Sung, Director of the Spine Center at St. Peter's Hospital, has published ‘Getting Started with Bayesian Statistics’, an introductory book on the basic concepts of Bayesian statistics, which improve the accuracy of judgment under uncertain conditions.
‘Bayesian statistics’ is a method of statistical analysis that corrects prior judgments and improves the accuracy of predictions as new information accumulates.
Because it can handle real-world uncertainty mathematically, it is widely used in data-driven fields including AI and machine learning.
The scope for using Bayesian statistics in clinical practice is also growing.
It can be applied across a range of areas — clinical trial design, prediction of treatment risk for individual patients, estimation of diagnostic accuracy and prevalence, and analysis of drug side effects — refining judgments by incorporating newly obtained information about the patient.
The book is the product of research that Director Lee, Choon Sung has continued since he first encountered Bayesian statistics about ten years ago while at Asan Medical Center, when he was struck by its similarity to clinical judgment.
Director Lee structured the book around core concepts so that readers without a statistics background can easily understand Bayesian statistics.
It covers the history of Bayesian statistics and its basic way of thinking as well as its potential applications in clinical medicine, so that readers can explore the concepts and their practical use together.
It also covers the difference between Bayesian statistics and the frequentist statistics long used widely in medical research.
Dr. Lee, Choon Sung said, “Bayesian statistics is a tool that helps you make better decisions and judgments even under uncertain conditions and with limited information,” adding, “It can be usefully applied to solving a wide range of real-world problems, including those in clinical practice.”
He added, “I hope more people will come to understand the basic concepts of Bayesian statistics and encounter a new perspective on statistical thinking.”
